Think you know something?... Think again!
Think you know something?... Think again!
How often have you thought you really knew something, or had mastered it, or were so confident that the task seemed simple, mundane or routine? Often this is when entrepreneurs, business owners and executives become complacent and in the end, ultimately get burned or busted their customers or their competition.
As an example, rapidly take this simple little quiz – No Cheating!:
1. How long did the Hundred years war last?
2. Where are Chinese gooseberries from?
3. What is the color of the “Black Box” in an airplane?
4. Which country makes Panama hats?
5. What is a camel’s hair brush made of?
6. What color is a purple finch?
7. What animal is the Canary Islands named after?
Go to the bottom of this message and see how you did. Did you do as well as you thought you would? Or did you have to “think again” about your perception or belief about the subjects of the questions?
Entrepreneurs who develop a “think again” mind-set are those who will always innovate, constantly improve their customer’s experience and will forever stay ahead of their competition.
If you find yourself getting comfortable or falling into predictable routines it is time to – Think Again!
1. How long did the Hundred years war last? (Think Again! – 116 years)
2. Where are Chinese gooseberries from? (Think Again! – New Zealand)
3. What is the color of the “Black Box” in an airplane? (Think Again! – Orange)
4. Which country makes Panama hats? (Think Again! – Ecuador)
5. What is a camel’s hair brush made of? (Think Again! – Squirrel fur)
6. What color is a purple finch? (Think Again! – Crimson red)
7. What animal is the Canary Islands named after? (Think Again! – A Dog)
Good Enough Never Is!
Good Enough Never Is!
The mediocre and complacent justify their lack of effort and excellence by saying, “My work was good enough.” Well, good enough never is, as you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Second best can lead to second class and in the competitive global marketplace mediocrity leads to irrelevance and being relegated to the status of “also-ran.”
The debate then becomes, what is good enough? Here is an interesting look at things – If 99% was good enough the following would happen in the United States not to mention what would happen globally.
If 99% were good enough then:
12 newborns will be given to the wrong parents daily.
114,500 mismatched pairs of shoes will be shipped each year.
18,322 pieces of mail will be mishandled each hour.
2,000,000 documents will be lost by the IRS this year.
2.5 million books will be shipped with the wrong covers.
315 entries in Webster's Dictionary will be misspelled.
20,000 incorrect drug prescriptions will be written this year.
880,000 credit cards in circulation will turn out to have incorrect card holder information on their magnetic strips.
103,260 income tax returns will be processed incorrectly during the year
5.5 million cases of soft drinks produced will be flat.
291 pacemaker operations will be performed incorrectly.
In many things 100% perfection is required. In everything 110% effort and excellence is the order of the day. So whatever you do – do it with excellence, knowing that if you don’t – your competition will.
There are certain things in life and in business which require perfection. The rest must simply be done with excellence. A heart surgeon clearly has some things which require perfection. On the flip side, some activities are not worthy of perfection like getting through your email or reprinting your handouts for the meeting for the twentieth time because you want to try it in one more different font or color. (There is the perfection paralysis syndrome too, so there must be a balance.)
It is a good exercise to determine what things in your organization or in your individual life require perfection and what things require excellence.
The message is to live your life and run your business with a 110% commitment to excellence – because good enough never is.

Coaching - Where they cannot take themselves
All coaching is, is taking a player where they can’t take themselves. Bill McCartney
Taking employees, colleagues, students, friends or family members where they can’t take themselves is the true test of leaders and coaches. There is nothing more satisfying in life than to know you made a difference in helping someone achieve something they are passionately pursuing.
How do you take someone where they can’t take themselves? All great coaching, in any area of life or business, comes down to four critical keys: Education, Inspiration, Application and Accountability.
As a coach you must first deliver some education, some knowledge, wisdom or insight. It doesn’t necessarily need to be your own knowledge, it can be from other coaches, leaders or industry experts.
Second, you must provide some inspiration. Motivating those you coach so that their desire to act increases is mission critical. Everyone needs some motivation from time to time so as a coach it is vital to your success.
Third, is application. If you don’t provide those you coach with an opportunity or path to apply what needs to be practiced or improved, you have just created zeal without knowledge. Or you have created someone who will get twice as lost, twice as fast, but they will be excited. As has often been said, “Knowledge is only potential power until it is applied.”
The fourth component to good coaching, and by far the most important, is accountability. Holding those you coach accountable for what they do, or don’t do, is what will ultimately determine your success as a coach of people.
Combing education, inspiration, application and accountability will help you help those you lead and coach to places they cannot take themselves. And you will experience for yourself the ultimate satisfaction which comes to high-impact coaches.

Focusing on the Reverse of an Idea
"The key to success is to focus your conscious mind on the things you desire not the things you fear." Brian Tracy
It is true that your mind cannot focus on the reverse of an idea. For example, if I asked you repeatedly to NOT think of a pink elephant – there is a very high probability that you would have nothing but pink elephants filling your mind. This seems to be especially true when you are under a great deal of stress or pressure.
A concert pianist who is focused on not making a mistake in measures 48 through 55 in their performance actually increases the likelihood of it happening. The basketball coach who hammers his or her players to not throw a lateral pass in the final two minutes of the game is likely to watch that happen. The employee who is constantly told not to forget a critical step – often will. And, the entrepreneur who focuses on not failing, or the negative impact failure might bring is already on the self-fulfilling path to failure.
Focus on the positive results you want first, last and always. Never allow your mind to become cluttered with the things you fear. Remember, your mind cannot focus on the reverse of an idea. So stay focused on the positive, lock-in and lock-on to the results you desire. Then go out there and make it happen!

Just Say No
"It’s easy to say no! when there’s a deeper yes! burning inside." Stephen R. Covey
Have you become a “yes” person? Do you take on commitments, agree to meetings and make promises when you know you should be saying, no? Some people say yes out of fear, some because they want to be liked and some say yes simply because they have no focus or plan for themselves. Learning to say no is vital to your success and your sanity.
You must recognize that when you say yes, but wish you had said no, you don’t do anyone any favors. The other person believes you can and will deliver as promised – so they are now set up for failure. And you begin to feel overwhelmed knowing you have far too many commitments and can’t possibly keep them all. The stress caused by saying yes is huge and can become a cracking point for you and for your business.
Many people are afraid to say no for fear of loss or that the other person might be offended. The reality is people would much rather you say no now than find out last minute that you really couldn’t do what you said yes to.
The best way to have confidence in saying no, as Stephen Covey suggests, is to have a deep and very compelling yes burning inside of you. In other words, if you have clearly established your goals and priorities it becomes much easier to evaluate whether or not you should say yes to another commitment. You will also find that by having your deeper yes, you will no longer have the big guilt when saying no.
When saying no is the right thing to say, say it! Everyone will be better off in the end for it. Unfortunately when we say yes to too many low priority items we often end up having to say no to things that are truly important. A string of unnecessary yeses can often lead to saying no to the “opportunity of a lifetime” and often we say no to it by default.
Evaluate your current commitments – if there are some that are just out of the realm of possibility, deal with them now. By regularly reviewing your commitments you will become very good at saying no when needed and saying yes to the commitments that matter most.

Keeping Score (from iLG Spotlight Newsletter)
As die-hard sports fans, we love making sports analogies and think there isn’t a better comparison to business and life. We recently read the book, The Game of Work by Charles Coonradt, and found an illustration that is a perfect application for your iLearningGlobal business.
Think about the differences in the scoring system for ice skating and ice hockey. In ice skating, the skater doesn’t really know how well he or she is performing until the scores are received from the judges after the performance is already over. By then, there is no way to improve upon the performance. In ice hockey, the scoreboard always reveals the winning and losing teams. Knowing the score allows both teams to know what they need to do to achieve their desired outcome, which allows hockey players the opportunity to change the outcome of the game based on what they do with the information from the scoreboard.
In business, winners keep track of results while losers keep track of reasons. Winners know they have to keep track of how they’re doing because they understand that numbers provide feedback. We often find that people who are at the top of their game are typically so familiar with their own track record that they can rattle off the numbers easily.
Although it takes courage to keep score, especially if you’re behind, it’s the only way to succeed. Even when you’re initially behind, it’ll help you win in the long run. Scoreboards don’t lie and you have to have the courage to look at the numbers if you want to accomplish what you’re really after.
We are currently entering the prime time for the direct selling market. This is the best time to get to work on your business! Making a few phone calls probably won’t do much, but keeping score and doing more of the things that work will. Improving on the things you’re good at and eliminating the things you’re not are absolutely critical for success.
We urge you to keep track of your accomplishments and goals as the best way to win in this business!

Who is in charge?
The day that you discover that you are in charge of your life is the day you turn your life around. Patricia Fripp- iLearningGlobal.tv Faculty Member
It is also true that the day you discover that you are in charge of your business is the day you turn your business around! Who is in charge of your life and your business -today? Are you living your life and running your business or are they running you? Are you running your business and living your life by choice or by chance? Default or decision?
It has often been said, and more often played out, that most entrepreneurs run out of energy, enthusiasm and drive long before they run out of money and opportunity. The reason that is true is because so many are not functioning in their personal or professional life like they are in charge. When you are not in charge it is easy to lose hope, easy to feel like a victim, easy to feel out of control. None of which lead to positive results and forward movement
You are in charge of your life! You are in charge of your business! Act that way and you will see your confidence grow, your vision expand, your energy rise and your business begin to boom.
You can do this. Take charge (because you are in charge) and go make it happen – TODAY!

Net-playing or Net-working?
You have to get out there and connect with people. It's not called net-sitting, net-playing or net-eating. It's called net-working. You have to work at it. Ivan Misner
In our challenging economy the need for networking has never been greater. Yet there are many who have a misguided or misdirected view of what networking is all about. Some take the view that by showing up to an event they are networking. Others assume that by socializing and being the life of the party they will get results. Still others count all their hours at events and functions as their highest priority while leaving many mission critical priorities unattended.
As Dr. Misner has stated, “It’s called net-working.” This implies that your efforts in networking must be focused, strategic and on purpose. Networking is not solely about amassing a large number of people who like you. On the other hand it also is not about calculating every word and interaction. There is a balance for sure – and the balance usually tips on what value you are providing to those you meet.
The important thing to remember about networking – is to be strategic, use your time and resources wisely, be of maximum benefit to those you interact with and make sure you are engaging in networking by choice and not by chance.
Networking is work – but if you do truly work at it, again, with a plan and a purpose it will help you grow your business and build a network worth having.
